The flue is there to direct the carbon dioxide to the outside of the building, if this does not happen the geyser is fitted with a sensor that will shut down the geyser within 4 minutes. This is a safety feature.
When installing the geyser on the outside the use of a flue will give it a better draft, thereby improving performance.
